Why is Bar Council of India (BCI) approval mandatory for law colleges?
Under the Advocates Act, 1961 and Rules of Legal Education, 2008, a law degree is only valid for enrollment with a State Bar Council and for appearing in the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) if the law college or department (Centre of Legal Education) was approved by the BCI during your study period.
What happens if I study in a fake university or unapproved law college?
Degrees awarded by fake universities or unapproved law colleges are invalid. They are not recognized for government/private jobs, nor can you enroll as an advocate with any Bar Council in India.
If an institute or university is UGC-recognized, is every degree it awards automatically valid?
No. Institutional recognition under UGC Section 2(f) confirms the university is legally established, but degree validity depends on program-level compliance: (1) The degree nomenclature must be specified by UGC under Section 22; (2) Professional courses (like Engineering, B.Ed, Pharmacy, Nursing, Law, Medicine) require mandatory approvals from their respective statutory regulatory councils (AICTE, NCTE, PCI, INC, BCI, NMC); (3) Distance or online courses require session-specific UGC-DEB entitlement; and (4) State private universities cannot operate out-of-state study centers or off-campus franchise networks.
